Description

Hex bolts or Hexagon head bolts> are the most popular styles of bolt and come in a variety of sizes, diameters and materials. Mostly used in construction and mechanical applications.

Hot Dipped Galvanised is a common finish applied to fastener products. The process involves dipping the product in a bath of molten zinc. The zinc adheres to the fasteners during the dipping. Control of coating thickness and the removal of surplus zinc is usually achieved by centrifuging the fasteners upon withdrawal from the zinc bath. Hot dipped galvanizing (HDG) applies a coating thickness approximately ten times that of zinc plating. Corrosion protection is related to coating thickness, therefore the finish offers roughly ten times the protection of zinc plating. Because of the coating thickness and the application method, there are some problems to be overcome. Firstly, coating thickness demands that an allowance be made for a thread to fit. This is achieved by tapping galvanized nuts oversized. Galvanized externally threaded fasteners (bolts, screws,etc) cannot be assembled with plain finish or zinc plated internally threaded fasteners (nuts) of standard dimensions. All mating parts must be in a condition known as “fully tapped.” The colour of hot dipped galvanised is silvery but unlike the various forms of zinc plating, HDG produces a finish that is of rough appearance.

Thread/Pitch(metric)

The pitch of a thread is the distance between threads on a fastener. Pitch is expressed differently for both imperial and metric threads. Imperial thread pitches are expressed in terms of the number of threads per inch of thread, TPI. In metric thread forms, the pitch is the distance from the crest of one thread to the crest of the next. This distance is expressed in millimetres, mm.

Length

Fasteners are typically measured from under the head to the end of the shank. Washer face products are measured from under the washer face to the end of the shank. Note that countersunk product is measured overall.
